Limits on the Abundance of Galactic Planets from Five Years of Planet Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
We search for signatures of planets in 43 intensively monitored microlensing events that were observed between 1995 and 1999. Planets would be expected to cause a short duration (∼ 1 day) deviation on the smooth, symmetric light curve produced by a single-lens. We find no such anomalies and infer that less than 1/3 of the ∼ 0.3M⊙ stars that typically comprise the lens population have Jupiter-mass companions with semi-major axes in the range of 1.5AU < a < 4AU. Since orbital periods of planets at these radii are 3-15 years, the outer portion of this region is currently difficult to probe with any other technique. Planet Sensitivity from Combined Ground- and Space-based Microlensing Observations
To move one step forward toward a Galactic distribution of planets, we present the first planet sensitivity analysis for microlensing events with simultaneous observations from space and the ground. We present this analysis for two such events, OGLE-2014-BLG-0939 and OGLE-2014-BLG-0124, which both show substantial planet sensitivity even though neither of them reached high magnification. This s...
متن کاملMicrolensing limits on numbers and orbits of extra-solar planets from the 1998-2000 OGLE events
We analyze three years (1998-2000) of OGLE observations of microlensing events to place limits on the abundance of planets with a planet-to-star mass ratio q = 10 at distances∼ 1−4AU from their host stars, i.e. ‘cool Jupiters’. We fit a total of 145 events using a maximum likelihood fit that adjusts 6 parameters. Each data point on the lightcurve allows us to exclude planets close to the two im...
متن کاملThe abundance of galactic planets from OGLE - III 2002 microlensing data
From the 389 2002 OGLE-III observations of Galactic Bulge microlensing events we select 321 that are well described by a point-source point-lens lightcurve model. From this sample we identify n = 1 event, 2002-BLG-055, which we regard as a strong planetary lensing candidate, and another, 2002-BLG-140, which is a possible candidate. If each of the 321 lens stars has 1 planet with a mass ratio q ...
متن کاملMicrolensing search for extrasolar planets: observational strategy, discoveries and implications
Microlensing has proven to be a valuable tool to search for extrasolar planets of Jovianto Super-Earth-mass planets at orbits of a few AU. Since planetary signals are of very short duration, an intense and continuous monitoring is required. This is achieved by groundbased networks of telescopes (PLANET/RoboNET, μFUN) following up targets, which are identified as microlensing events by single de...
متن کاملPlanetary Transits toward the Galactic Bulge
One of the primary difficulties with using transits to discover extrasolar planets is the low probability a planet has of transiting its parent star. One way of overcoming this difficulty is to search for transits in dense stellar fields, such as the Galactic bulge. Here I estimate the number of planets that might be detected from a monitoring campaign toward the bulge. A campaign lasting 10 ni...
